ABSTRACT

A key to achieving morphing states within architecture, is to better understand the betweenness of spatial configurations. And for this, the art and science of origami serves as a wonderful vehicle by which to explore and evolve the transience of architecture. In fact, by aiming for better transience, both architectural beauty and function can be heightened as dynamic states become leveraged through scientific laws, skillful talents and ingenious applications. The power of designing with more "shades of gray" can be seen by exploring the example of architectural lighting. Typically lights have one color, two settings and one static location. Origami patterns change with movement and light. And each time an origami form moves it can be experienced differently because motion and light are dynamic. The goal with adaptive architecture is to design so occupants are better off because of their architectural experience.
