ABSTRACT

Ethics, like management, is a practice. The practice of ethics is called virtue and to be ethical is to practice the virtues. Looked at managerially, each of these four aspects of ethical activity serves a different function: Managerial: Prudence serves the Managerial/Leadership Function. Its task is effectiveness. Social: Justice serves the Social Function. Its task is to be fair and give others what is rightfully due them. Trust: Courage serves the Trustworthy Function. Its task is to act with bravery in the face of external threats, dangers, and recriminations. Sane and Sober: Temperance serves the sanity or sobriety function. Justice means giving others their due by fulfilling our duties and obligations toward them. To learn how this works and what this means, we need to study the liberal arts. This is the stuff of art and philosophy, history, biography, social and political science.
