ABSTRACT

Deir Ballut has the misfortune of having both a checkpoint and roadblocks obstructing movement beyond the village. Every morning, hundreds of locals pass through the checkpoint on their way to work. Dozens of young children living in the village outskirts must show their IDs and have their backpacks searched every morning on the long walk to school. In the old days, the students used to take a bus to school, but the checkpoint and roadblocks obstructing movement in and out of the village now make that option more hassle than it’s worth.
