ABSTRACT
When I conceived the plan of this paper, the topic of net-work factors was provided in order to cover the structural characteristics of a system of communicants. I thought of the topic as a rug under which the leavings from each of the prior topics would be brushed as each was “cleaned up.” But when I looked under the rug I found not only the leavings but everything else that had been treated up till then. To clean up the mess required that I elect some theory of organization. When that disastrous insight occurred I knew with the full conviction of a gut response how Norman Maier’s rats felt when they were being goosed off their perches but were unable to choose where to jump. I crawled off the platform, went home, beat up my family and crawled into bed.
