ABSTRACT
The conceptions of information of the men considered here have in common an exceedingly important feature: all treat information as an existent that is subject to clear, empirical, physical, and, in some cases, mathematical manipulations. The thing they designate by the term “information” is thus something quite different from the general philosophical notion of knowledge. I regard this as good, and in the theory I tried to borrow from each as much as I could.
