ABSTRACT

As we move toward the conclusion of this book, let us keep in mind the importance of continuing to build on the infinite potential of language by looking very far up and very far down the ladder of linguistic abstraction. Looking far up that ladder, what we see as the result of an evolutionary worldview is, simply, the idea of the continuing evolution of all of us individuals. And this is not just with respect to “hand” but also with respect to “head” and “heart.” Thus, we cannot see this chapter narrowly or bureaucratically as limited to “hand”: Here we must also learn more about the development of “head” and “heart” beyond our earlier ideas. And the same is the case for moving very far down that ladder to the situational area between the parallel lines within Figures 2-5. In this chapter—if indeed we are following an evolutionary path within this book—we should be learning more about more concrete or specific ways of applying these ideas to one momentary scene after another.
