ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some basic similarities and differences between the print lesson plan and the hypermodal lesson plan. Finnemann considers hypertext as a text system that activates at least two modal shifts in the reading process: the reading mode, and the navigation mode. The chapter presents an analysis of the types of hyperlinks found in the lesson plans of the two portals and their interconnection with content organization and webpage and navigation design, by drawing on studies of signaling in online environments. NewsHour Extra and Rethinking Schools portals built on the holistic perspective of website hierarchy, with several lesson plans on the same topic being grouped together under a main page. The chapter reveals some of the ways in which the Internet medium and its affordances affect the social contexts of production, distribution, and circulation of the online lesson plan genre.
