ABSTRACT

In the broader U.S. economy, women are paid 77 cents for each dollar a man earns while still largely doing a “second shift” of unpaid domestic labor. The disparity is even greater for women in racial and ethnic minorities. Women teaching

at all levels of schooling from pre-kindergarten through university earn less than their male counterparts. What is more, women are overrepresented at the lower levels of education and underrepresented at the highest levels. The same pattern holds true for women working as teachers and as educational administrators. The higher one looks up the educational ladder, the fewer women there are in leadership roles and in teaching roles.
