In the 1960s, the prospects for equality for farm workers, and for Mexican Americans generally, seemed within reach. Many Americans cared about the welfare of farm workers, and Robert Kennedy helped elevate the struggles of César Chávez for equality to the mainstream of U.S. consciousness in the 1960s, when anything seemed possible.
