ABSTRACT
Hunting and gathering societies monopolized 99 percent of human history, and some still survive today. The members of these societies survive by hunting wild animals and collecting wild plant and vegetable matter. It was long thought that their members exist at a bare margin of survival, but more recent evidence suggests that most live adequately with a minimum of work effort. In fact, it has been suggested that they constitute a kind of “original affluent society.”
