ABSTRACT

The orchestral settings of three of his narrations from On the Road and the second movement of the author's flute concerto Giants of the Night, written for James Galway and dedicated to Jack, were also formal works that sum up the results of our collaborations. They did this all the time at Lucien Carr's house, at his apartment on the lower East Side in 1956, Christopher Street in 1957-58, and 6th Avenue from 1959 until the last time the author played a duet with Jack over the phone a few weeks before he died, in 1969. Finally, on October 22, 1995, he conducted members of the National Symphony Orchestra in an evening he never forgets. The concert went amazingly well. When E. G. Marshall narrated his piece, he rose to a whole other level. He was Thomas Jefferson. The orchestra, as well as the audience, was galvanized.
