ABSTRACT

In March, 1997, the author read a wonderful article by Bob Kealing of WESH-TV in the Orlando Sentinel. It described in detail the house in Orlando, Florida, where Jack and his mother lived. Joyce Johnson had sent thirty dollars to Jack to take the Greyhound bus to New York City, so that if On the Road was reviewed favorably he would be there. The Kerouac Writers' Residence in a few short years evolved from a dream to a reality. Now, many people who have seen the success of what happened in Orlando are trying to encourage other communities around the country to honor their own artists. The Kerouac Writers' Residence was created to honor lasting values and creation of new works. Like Walt Whitman and the Indian legend Kokopelli, Jack and his legacy were about spreading energy and opportunity to others.
