ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the unprecedented catastrophic existential crises faced by the United States and the entire world. The United States is facing decline of its dominant global position, and most Americans tell pollsters they see a downward spiral, where their children and grandchildren live less well than themselves. Jobs are disappearing, and with them the hopes of millions of Americans. Over recent decades, a majority in the United States has moved in a progressive direction. This reflects the spread in the United States of far more liberal attitudes toward not just race but also widespread and deepening support for protecting the environment. The same liberal trend is evident in the public's long and growing distrust of big business, and the majority's view that corporate money is corrupting democracy and needs to be reined in. This is a very surprising hint that the US younger generation might be moving toward support of changing the system and in a progressive direction.
