ABSTRACT

"The author thinks many Americans today have never been part of a social movement and just won't understand what they are talking about. Many of his own students tell him that movements may have been big in the sixties but just aren't their generation's thing". "That may be true for the moment in the United States", the ghost acknowledged. Most of my students are involved with service projects, such as tutoring. Few are activists in social movements. Social movements are the best medicine because they not only overcome personal isolation but attack the system that creates it. Many become activists, no longer satisfied with bandaging the symptoms, and realizing that only activism can heal the disease. So the last thing they are doing is looking to join a movement. Hence joining social movements is one of the best ways to enrich our personal life, meet new people, and build new connections at work and in our community.
