ABSTRACT

This chapter enables participants to distinguish between biological and socially constructed differences between boys and girls, and recognize the traditional practices that can have a harmful impact on young women and girls. The chapter enables identification of forms of violence against young women and girls, and appreciating the impact on victims. It helps to gain information about adolescent sexuality and about ways to promote the human rights of young women and girls with respect to health care, privacy, and equality. The chapter then discusses the ways in which girls labor can be exploited, at home as well as in both the formal and informal work sectors. It debates the role of authorities in both perpetuating and combating human rights abuses against young women and girls. The chapter finally strategizes ways in which individuals, organizations, and authorities can improve the human rights of young women and girls.
