ABSTRACT
Not long ago, a white anti-immigration group in Arizona burned a Mexican flag near a Mexican Consulate. Periodically, other such groups do vigilante patrols of the US-Mexican border. The steady rise in the US Latino population and the supposedly “massive waves” of undocumented and other Spanish-speaking immigrants from Mexico and Central America in recent decades are societal developments that many whites view with great and continuing alarm. As a result, frequent acts of aggression or exclusion have been aimed at these Spanish-speaking immigrants and their numerous descendants.
