ABSTRACT

We teach history and know the problems of getting kids today off YouTube, and their common tendency to associate past social movements only with such famous leaders as Martin Luther King, César Chávez, and Rosa Parks. It’s a step forward that our students even recognize these names, and we see this top-down understanding of well-known leaders as the key entry point for getting them to see the movements that thrust those leaders into the spotlight, movements composed of young people very much like themselves.
