ABSTRACT
Establishing boundaries in the classroom is one key to becoming the kind of teacher one wants to be. For too many teachers, though, this is nothing more than announcing a set of rules that defines good behavior. Inexperienced teachers worry, with just cause, about being overwhelmed by behavior problems that are often profound. Based on these early fears, many teachers with years of experience continue to imagine that they can control students with rules. Yet, it is not abnormal to fail at holding them hard and fast. Too often, teachers make rules that they constantly feel unable to carry out. Unfortunately, behavior problems have become an accepted part of classroom experience. No teacher will be fired simply because they occur. All that is expected is a reasonable level of control.
