1783 marked the beginning of a boom in the British slave trade.… Slavery seemed as entrenched as ever. If pressed, some Britons might have conceded that the institution was unpleasant—but where else would sugar for your tea come from? … No major thinker defended slavery, but few spent real effort attacking it.
