ABSTRACT

This chapter provides food for thought on program location, model, length, and options for learning experiences. It also reviews the ways that student can familiarize themselves with the options available to one in relation to their school's policies on study abroad and requirements for graduation. The task of selecting a study abroad program should not be taken lightly, as it is the key to a memorable, challenging, and rewarding experience. The third-party organization takes care of admission to the foreign institution, housing, orientation, and in most cases provides on-site staff and other services. The third-party provider might be an institutional unit of a college or university, such as programs run by Antioch Education Abroad or by Arcadia University's Center for Education Abroad. They might also be run by a nonprofit group, like IES Abroad, or even for-profit organizations. By approaching organizations and individuals that inform their research, students learn much about the workings of the culture.
