ABSTRACT

Preparation for studying abroad is a multifaceted endeavor. It requires consideration of student's academic core objectives, utilization of resources offered to them, and independent research. Prior academic work at their home institution, as well as predeparture orientations, can give them a means to begin their preparation in an organized manner. Predeparture orientation program cover topics ranging from logistical matters health and safety, program details and schedules, administrative issues, travel and packing tips, academic issues, liability and legal matters, in-country communication, information about the host country to matters requiring more profound reflection such as cross-cultural communication, adjustment, reentry, stereotypes, or cultural information on the host country. One recent study found that the very act of formulating goals played an important role in the development of global understanding and cross-cultural skills. The concept of university and college support for study abroad became much more institutionalized, and democratized, in the twentieth century.
