ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses ways for students to contextualize their experiences, use their skills at intercultural competence, and strengthen their commitment to confront global issues. It offers practical approaches to translate study abroad into valuable vocational skills and a globally engaged life. The chapter encourages students to think about ways to keep their overseas study experience alive in terms of their educational and career development. Students who have travelled extensively and gained deep insight can be fascinated by the potential for a career in the Department of State Foreign Service Officer corps or the Department of Commerce or the National Transportation Safety Board. The Peace Corps is one of the highest-profile public service programs sponsored by the U.S. government for work in a foreign country. Study abroad can also have an indirect impact on student's graduate school plans. College graduates typically pursue a master's or doctoral degree in order to gain necessary certification for employment.
