      ABSTRACT

Ulysses S. Grant, who followed Johnson into the presidency after winning the election of 1868, had been the commander of all the Union armies in the Civil War. As president, he is generally regarded by historians as a failure because of corruption in his administration and because he allowed many abuses by greedy businessmen. But in recent years, Grant has been credited with a more enlightened view on racial issues than had been earlier realized.
