ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the characteristics of pre-industrial socialization practices and contrasts the socialization processes between more traditional societies and more contemporary societies. It explains how many couples' scripts change after becoming parents and outlines some of the concerns non-parental child care. The chapter briefly describes the major theorists' ideas about socialization and childrearing, discusses the controversy over the role of punishment in childrearing. It explains whether or not the mother's work patterns have any influence over child development and comment on issues relevant to single-parent households and gay and lesbian parent households.
