ABSTRACT

Ethical behavior is best assured when taught with guided conversations among children themselves. This chapter first provides a discussion, based on Amanda Berry book Tensions in Teaching about Teaching, on an underlying tension between confidence and uncertainty. Teaching ethics is not easy. Uncertainty is part of the package. The meaning of core values is clarified and, with this, how the personal development of these values enhances a sense of confidence. Next, the chapter discusses the interactive role of knowledge and intuition in the practice of teaching. Intuitive knowledge about teaching is as important as what one studies about guiding learning. Recognizing how uncertainty, establishing core values, and making room for intuition enter into the curriculum, it offers two plans: one addresses permissible acts of killing, and the other, coping with evil. Teaching a unit on the ethics of killing can begin with one of the Ten Commandments: "Thou Shalt Not Kill".
