ABSTRACT

Rick Riordan, a popular prolific writer, drew children into stories that involve Greek and Roman myth, their gods and goddesses, and modern global ethical problems to boot. This chapter interweaves four topics into its pages: shifting awarenesses that deepen our knowledge of everyday ethics; reader activities that enliven the text; media for involving different kinds of communicating; and travel to places near and far. In the zone of global concerns, the tensions between values are exacerbated and yet, people stand to learn the most from these tensions. Academic discussion about the nature of empathy is less important than engaging in opportunities to explore problems from many vantages. Doing communal work together, locally or globally, is usually experienced as exciting. Young people can be guided in creating or attaching themselves to projects where the work is meaningful, useful, and enjoyable, particularly because it is done as teamwork.
