As discussed in Chapter 11, most students attend college to find a job, rather than simply to increase their base of cumulative knowledge. Thus, students are naturally curious about what types of jobs they will qualify for with their major degree. The answers are a little clearer with some majors than they are with others. For example, students with a degree in business assume that they are qualified to find a job in business. Education majors will most likely teach. Prelaw students expect to go on to graduate school and eventually find a profession in the area of law, perhaps as a lawyer. There are some majors, however, where future job opportunities are a little less clear. For example, what will a student do with a degree in philosophy or history? More relevant to our discussion, what type of career can someone

expect to find with a degree in sociology? That is certainly a fair question, and one that will be answered by the end of this chapter.
