ABSTRACT

A group of high school students has met at Smokers’ Corner, a location on their school campus that is out of the view of teachers and administrators. They meet there every morning and during their lunch break. Although they have heard the warnings about the health risks of cigarette smoking, they choose to smoke anyway. They rationalize their behavior in an attempt to ignore the admonitions not to smoke. One of the students, Monty, states, “I do not believe that smoking is that bad for you.” Chip responds, “I am more likely to die from a car crash than I am from smoking.” Carole adds, “I like the way I look when I hold a cigarette.” Agreeing with Carole, Susan proclaims, “And we look so cool when we smoke!”
