ABSTRACT

Changing Lives Through Literature is full of reawakened dreams and hopes for a fresh start. Are such hopes justified in the long run? What has been the result for the men whose stories I have been telling? Has Changing Lives raised false hopes for Albert? Will these hopes vanish if he doesn’t try to attain them by applying to a college? How lasting are his rediscovered self-respect and his sense of having been “listened to” as he unburdened himself in the Changing Lives classroom? Is his a “success story” whether or not he realizes his fantasy of college and a career?
