In December 2005, the Swedish government announced a pledge to be independent from oil by 2020. To cope with the inevitable post-petroleum age whether forced by the onset of peak oil or pushed by the increasingly fearful impacts of global climate change some communities are already hard at work laying detailed plans for how to live without oil. More accurately, the Swedes have committed to being free from oil. The Swedish plan stands out as one of the most ambitious on the planet, especially when compared to countries such as the United States, where oil imports have increased steadily for more than 20 years. The Swedish governments pledge was not the consequence of any focused campaign by grassroots green groups to demand such a pledge. The Swedish plan for reducing oil use is straightforward. The country hopes to make the biggest cuts by eliminating home heating oil, currently the number-one petroleum use.
