ABSTRACT
As Black Power and the Vietnam War destroyed the fragile consensus within the civil rights leadership, King was forced to advance a more progressive human rights agenda which was clearly opposed to US foreign and domestic interests. But the black clergy, which still occupies an important position within black society, have been generally unwilling or unable to follow King’s example.
