ABSTRACT
Sometimes working with community activists, liberation-oriented sociologists have interactively developed concepts, methods, and practices to assist people in their struggles as well as to better understand and improve their everyday lives. In this and the next chapter we examine specific examples of sociological projects that are in this praxis tradition, most with a progressive or countersystem orientation. The examples are not exhaustive but illustrate the range of ways in which a type of liberation sociology has impacted communities, as well as the ways in which community activism has shaped liberation sociology in thought and practice. The first case we turn to is an example of the interaction between progressive community practice and a perspective that is essentially sociological.
