ABSTRACT
Solution Focused conversations fit well with the natural exploration of younger children as they learn about their worlds through trial and error and practical experience. Through examples of work with challenging classes and groups, this chapter will explore how to communicate with young children through play, role play, videos and other playful techniques to support the key SF concepts of building preferred outcomes, amplifying successes and supporting further progress. Stepping into the world of the imagination, there are numerous creative ideas to help younger children co-create the classroom environment that will bring out the best in themselves and others; a place where children have the space to contribute, grow and build their emotional intelligence in talking about what they want and what is happening. A detailed discussion of an individual conversation highlights the use of key SF skills in slowing down the process to help a younger student highlight, magnify and attach significance to what he is doing that supports the outcome that both he and the school are wanting.
