ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 presents a comparative study of different drainage designs in early- and later-constructed residential villages in The Woodlands. The innovative open surface drainage design used in early villages shifted back to conventional underground pipe drainage after ownership change in 1997. Results show that early villages generated less runoff than later villages, given similar impervious areas in them. The open surface drainage design responded to rainfalls in a way similar to the predevelopment natural forest conditions, indicating effective flood mitigation.
