ABSTRACT

In Chapter 18, the flooded situations after Hurricane Harvey was mapped out for the entire Houston region. The results are fairly consistent with what was presented in previous chapters – The Woodlands, especially the early-constructed villages, presents a higher level of resilience to flood. Also, the chapter reviews the contrasting experience of Staten Island in New York, another McHargarian project, with The Woodlands. It further outlines The Woodlands’ strategies of building resilience into community development. Finally, the chapter synthesizes new paradigms that carry forward McHarg’s ecological wisdom and his spirit for urban resilience, suggesting immense relevance to contemporary design practices.
