ABSTRACT

The chapters in our book have explored the contours of police integrity in South Africa. We relied on the police integrity theory to guide us in our empirical study of police integrity, based on the survey of 868 SAPS officers. This chapter collates and summarizes our discussion of the research findings in the contextual framework of social, political, legal, and economic factors, as well as prior empirical research on police integrity. With a focus on the future evolution of critical issues related to South African policing, we discuss the research and policy implications of our findings. The policy implications cover general themes, including police officer knowledge of official rules, perceptions of disciplinary fairness, and the contours of the code of silence.
