ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the first dimension of the theory of police integrity and presents the existing legal framework for the South African Police Service (SAPS). The discussion starts with constitutional norms, followed by an analysis of applicable criminal and common law and an analysis of those SAPS regulations specifically directing the work of police officers. The chapter provides a discussion about the relevant extant research. It also includes empirical analyses of police officer data, analyzing the level of police officers’ knowledge of official rules, and the extent of seriousness with which they evaluate various forms of police misconduct.
