ABSTRACT

This chapter studies the contours of police integrity across the SAPS hierarchical organizational structure. Rank in the SAPS is a contentious, political, and emotive subject. We discuss recruitment and promotion practices within the SAPS that emphasize the attainment of particular race and gender quotas and the related allegations of institutional bias. We study the potential differences among non-commissioned officers, commissioned officers, and police managers in their views on police integrity, namely, familiarity with the official rules, views about appropriate and expected discipline, and expressed willingness to report.
