ABSTRACT

This chapter develops the theme of racism and discrimination in the NHS. Students spend half of their course in clinical settings and this is mainly, though not entirely, in NHS trusts. HEE was set up in 2012 and has 13 regional offices, three of these for different parts of London. It makes final decisions about the numbers of students that it commissions, taking into account individual NHS trusts' annual workforce plans and the overall budget from the Department of Health, which has effectively put a limit on the maximum number recruited. An investigation by the group Dr Foster identified the way that some NHS trusts instigated practices aimed at avoiding penalties for missing targets that negatively affected patient care. The NHS, as well as the major health trade unions, offer guidance to anyone who feels they are being bullied at work.
