ABSTRACT

Renote Jean-Francois's students had no or limited schooling prior to their arrival in the Unites States. They were not proficient in English, and they attended the literacy class until they were ready to enter regular bilingual classes, usually in two, sometimes three years. While some students had been in her class for almost two years, others had been there for less than one. Renote has three major goals for the unit described in this profile. She wants to help students develop a conceptual understanding of angles and their measures, apply their knowledge of angles to programming a robot to model the course of the Haitian revolution on a map, and employ critical thinking skills by developing their own higher-level questions and redirecting their thinking when necessary. Renote explains the assignment to the students by telling them that Roamer has to pass through various towns on the map of Haiti to retrace the steps of a messenger during the Haitian Revolution.
