ABSTRACT

The Yacht Club distills the normative/identity preoccupations of the Sands and adds the dimensions of sociability, affiliation, and competition. Most Yacht Club members live in the Sands full-or part-time, experiencing its wealth, moral geography, street life, formal organization, and Lotos haze. Sands residents engage in sociability, and may be affiliative and competitive in their everyday lives. But sociability, affiliation, and competition are distilled within the walls and on the docks of the Yacht Club.
