ABSTRACT

Years ago, living in Hawaii, I was pulling into the university parking lot but then began to turn around since the sign at the entrance said “Full.” The woman in the kiosk beckoned me back. “The santo boy!” she laughed. “He turned the sign around when I wasn’t looking.” The santo boy was a teenager who liked to stand by the kiosk and watch the cars go by. Why was he a santo boy? His deficits meant that he’d been touched by God. Evidently holiness doesn’t always mean the same thing to everyone. What does holiness mean to Jews? What should it mean?
