ABSTRACT

The situation is particularly confusing when one tries to plot the battlefields of 1944 on present-day map of Manipur. One is confronted with a wide range of locations spread across the state in different directions, many clusters of battlefields seemingly disconnected and isolated from each other. The choice of location of these Japanese memorials is deliberate. For Red Hill and the village of Maibam, like many of the Second World War battlefields along the Tiddim Road, may convey a sense of tranquillity and rural idyll today. For battlefield tourists and historians, the scenery is a clear bonus - exploring the battlefields not only allows one to get a better sense of the fascinating Second World War history of Manipur but also lets one enjoy the beauty of this little-known North East Indian state. Slim's hub and spoke analogy is useful to have at the back of one's mind as one heads out of Imphal to explore the battlefields of 1944.
