ABSTRACT

The narrative is made all the more compelling by what is on offer: the battlefields, trenches, bunkers, war memorials and museums; the culture and traditions of its people; together with the scenic beauty of the place; and its agreeable climate. Indeed, Manipur has all the makings of an excellent Second World War battlefield tourism destination, not just for India but also in the wider Asian and international context. The positive news extends to the realm of Second World War battlefield tourism as well. A good beginning has been made with the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal from March to June 2014. The Manipur government is also now much more interested in developing battlefield tourism in the state, a move that is supported by the central authorities in New Delhi. The ultimate aim should be to establish Manipur as a premier Second World War battlefield tourism destination, centred on the Battle of Imphal.
