ABSTRACT

China emphasizes solidarity, and the household hangs together until it becomes a village except that the girls go out to help make other homes or villages, while other girls from other homes come in to help make theirs. The west emphasizes individualism where each man and woman make their own home a new home in which they start as equals. Again, the bearing and rearing of children must necessarily determine the place occupied by women. The girl is thus placed in a different sphere from that of the boy. Under the old tutorial system, education had as its aim the training of men for business or government service, and since women were not supposed to enter official service their education was not deemed necessary. Women has less education, fewer social privileges, less experience of the world, and is taught to be filial and submissive to all the older members of her family.
