ABSTRACT

Theology lies outside the scope of these lectures; or if it does not, it will doubtless be treated henceforward by some Theologian. Meanwhile the pursuit of science has had some influence on Theology: and the view which humanity can take of the ultimate Being must be either helpful or hindering to its progress. The progressive development of scientific thought emphasises the unity of plan and structure of the Universe. The cosmos hangs together. The Universe is a very big and comprehensive thing; humanity is, after all, only a corner of it, and it is not surprising that there are, and always have been, differences of opinion as to what truth is. Science recognises that misdoing will be appropriately punished, not by arbitrary decree, but by inexorable law. Its punishments are even more severe, less mitigated by compassion and kindliness, than are the punishments of any truly Christian Religion.
