ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses different ways or approaches to conducting qualitative research, including examples of the methodology used in those approaches. A corollary to the case study found in qualitative research is the aforementioned psychosocial assessment that is directed at gathering a complete description of a person or persons and provides an in-depth perspective of that person or group of individuals. The ethnographic approach to qualitative research is characterized by its focus on and examination of the shared culture of a group. Critical ethnography is based upon the proposition/concern that present society is one where power resides in a few due to their having a certain class, gender, religion or race with the marginalization of all others. Critical ethnographic research is conducted to support this proposition and to use the finding to advocate and make the public aware of the issues of inequality and power.
