ABSTRACT

The entire structure of the mind is fluid, in a constant state of development. The task of the scholar is not so much that of attempting to fix procedures into static states, as to comprehend how it is that a constant stream may maintain the unity of the self, even at a subjective level. With the exception of a small number of perennial cells, principally those making up the nervous system, our bodies renovate their cellular structure completely in under 10 years. And even with regard to the brain cells, only the neurons have the mortal privilege of being unable to reconstitute themselves. All the other structures, including the network of connections between the neurons, uninterruptedly form part of the cycle of generation and decomposition.
