ABSTRACT

This book has essentially three objectives:

An historical description of the birth of cognitive science: which disciplines created the conditions for its development, and which at present foster its growth.

An outline of the method of inquiry which characterises cognitive science, and through which it is defined. The method employed is constructivist, and it is carried out by means of the techniques of artificial intelligence. This amounts to assuming that mental activity is in principle reproducible by a computer program.

A description of the state of the art in the relevant subdisciplines.
