ABSTRACT

A description of the state of the art makes sense if it is reasonably up to date when it is read and not just when it is written. In a rapidly expanding sector, a photograph of the facts becomes obsolete almost instantaneously. Hence it does not constitute the most sensible road to take. I shall therefore attempt to follow a different route by presenting a picture of the currents of thought that have animated cognitive science in the last few decades, together with a description of the trends which presently traverse the field. My hope is that this type of strategy will render this account more resistant to time.
